Reserve Officer Program
Merkel Police Department Reserve Officers are sworn law enforcement officers and must become certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) prior to being considered for appointment. Reserve Officers, while on duty, possess the same authority as a peace officer with the City of Merkel. Reserve Officers are generally assigned to the Patrol Division and assist regular patrol officers in the performance of their duties. Reserve officers must work a minimum of 12 hours a month, not to exceed 20 hours in a week.
Applicants for the Reserve Officer position must pass a medical exam, an extensive background check, initial weapons qualification, and a psychological examination. All Reserve Officer Applicants will go through the same application process as a full-time sworn officer. Before acceptance, the Chief of Police will review all applicant credentials prior to appointment.
Uniforms are furnished by the police department. While this position does not provide any monetary compensation, it does give the satisfaction of public service in protecting the life, liberty and property of the City of Merkel citizens.
