Comment Moderation Policy
The City of Merkel Police Department, herein thereafter refered to as "MPD", utilizes social media in an effort to keep citizens informed and educated on local and state laws, current events and emergency notifications when applicable.
We believe social media helps to improve the quality of life for our citizens by creating a direct method of communication with your police. To create a social environment that is welcoming to all citizens, as part of our social media policy, all posts or comments containing offensive or perceived to be offensive language will be removed at the discretion of the MPD Administration.
MPD utilizes, when available, profanity filters that automatically block posts which use words and phrases marked as offensive by members of the community. MPD and its employees reserve the right to hide, delete, mute, block, ban or unfollow any persons or posts containing: false information, profanity, derogatory language, sexual content, threatening messages, advertisements, political messages, defamatory words, abusive remarks, harassment, hatred, anything that could violate the legal rights of others and anything that is promoting illegal activity as perceived by the administration.
Our site is not monitored 24/7, if you would like to report posts to our team, please send us a message, and we will respond to it as quickly as possible. Due to staffing, not all direct messages, page tags or questions can be answered; however, we will make an effort to respond to as many as possible.
We ask that you please not report crimes via our social media pages. If there is an emergency please call 911 immediately. If you would like to report a crime or see suspicious activity, please call our non-emergency line to report it as soon as possible at (325) 674-1300, Opt. 3.
We encourage our community to engage in meaningful, respectful conversation with fellow citizens on our site. Posting on our social media sites (including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Nextdoor, Snapchat and Linkedin) constitutes acceptance and understanding of the above terms.
The purpose of this Facebook page is to be a reliable resource for information regarding news, crime-prevention tips, programs and services of the Merkel Police Department (MPD). The MPD Facebook page is a moderated online discussion site and not a public forum. The MPD reserves the right to restrict or remove any content that is deemed in violation of these guidelines or any applicable laws. We wish to promote effective communication and maintain a respectful dialogue on our Facebook page. In that spirit, here are the guidelines for posting comments.
Comments on MPD posts must be within the scope of the topic under discussion. Comments or material not topically related to the site or article being commented upon will not be permitted.
Your comments must be civil. They must not contain malicious, offensive, threatening, profane or insulting language or obscene content.
No references to the personality of other participants or individuals, or attacks on individual character will be permitted. Comments containing any of the following will not be allowed for posting:

Personal attacks, insults or threatening language;

Conduct or encouragement of illegal activity;
Information that may tend to compromise the safety or security of the public or public systems;
Information about locating and sharing knowledge and expertise is welcomed, but within the specific discussion provided here;
Links to other websites or pages must be relevant to the topic;
Advertising or promotional announcements are not permitted.
