MERKEL POLICE DEPARTMENT
First and foremost, thank you for your interest in becoming a member of the City of Merkel, Merkel Police Department (MPD). The MPD was established with the incorporation of the City in 1906 as a City Marshall’s Office. Through the years the city and the department have grown and is now recognized and commissioned by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement as a Municipal Police Department. As with many smaller agencies, we face a number of challenges however there are many rewards. The type of officer we are looking for is a balance between a pro-active enforcer and a compassionate ambassador to our citizens. If you think you fit this mold, we are certainly interested in the opportunity to visit with you.
The MPD does not facilitate a Basic Peace Officer Academy therefor, all applicants must be a Texas Certified Peace Officer in good standing or anticipate being certified before your hire date. You are not required to have any experience for a Certified Police Officer position and we always welcome academy graduates! The City of Merkel does not have “depends on experience” (DOE) pay unless you are applying for a specific lateral position. All new hire pay will be based on the pay scale approved by the Chief of Police and the City Management as it is set in the annual budget. (See Minimum Requirements Sheet for specific jobs)
